13 Virtues Necessary For True Success (Benjamin Franklin)

Meditation can be a procedure that allows one to investigate the process of one's own consciousness and experiencing, and to discover the more basic, underlying qualities of one's existence as a intimate reality.

Ram Dass....

For one who has not examined the mind and has always identified completely with passing thoughts, the possibility of being able to rest in awareness free of thought may be a bit disconcerting.  It's a little like the caterpillar pointing up at the butterfly and saying, "You'll never get me up in one of those things."

While we rarely are able to maintain this kind of awareness all the time, we have all experienced it at one time or another.

The more deeply we listen, the more we attune ourselves to the roots of suffering and the means to help alleviate it.  It is through listening that wisdom, skill, and opportunity find form in an act that truly helps.  But more than all these, the very act of listening can dissolve distance between us and others as well.

(Begin by doing some relaxation exercises.)

Close your eyes, and get in touch with your body.  Wherever you notice some movement, tension, or discomfort, tell yourself to relax.  Make yourself comfortable by changing your position if you need to................

Now become aware of your breathing.......Notice all the details of how you are breathing.......Feel how the air moves into your nose or mouth.......and down your throat, and into your lungs.......Notice all the details of how your chest and abdomen move as the air flows in and out of your lungs.......(do this for as long as you care to).

Now, slowly and gently, open your eyes, and become aware of your surroundings.

The easiest way to get into a meditative state is to begin listening. Simply close your eyes and allow yourself to hear all the sounds that are going on around you. Don't try to identify the sounds you are hearing, don't put names on them, simply allow them to play with your eardrums. Let them go. Let your ears hear whatever they want to hear. Don't judge the sounds. There are no proper sounds nor improper sounds, and it doesn't matter if somebody coughs or sneezes or drops's all just sound.

As you hear sounds coming into your head;  thoughts; simply listen to them as part of the general noise going on.  Just as you would be listening to cars going by, or to birds chattering outside the window. So look at your own thoughts as just noises. And soon you will find that the outside world and the inside world come together. Everything is simply a happening and all you are doing is watching it.

The World of Light   (From: Wisdom from White Eagle)

Let's take a place in the World of Light. Forget your body and your lower mind, and concentrate on the center of light within your being.

Use your Heavenly imagination to visualize a vast arena with seats or steps rising in tiers from the center to an unimaginable height. Even beyond your capacity to see.

It is like an immense sun or circle of radiant light, most delicate, glowing with all the soft radiance of the spiritual heart of life..................... You will see, as you gaze, that all those seats rising from the base and far beyond your vision are filled by a vast company of white-robed brethren; and among this great gathering there is a sense of expectancy. You will hear music.....................the harmony of the spheres.

Now, see coming down into your vision the form of the simple, loving Master, the embodiment of the Cosmic Christ. Can you feel and respond to this blessing? Do you see the beauty of his face, the simplicity and nobility of his being, the wisdom and love which shines from him? Do you feel his love drawing you towards him, giving you peace, reassurance, and strength? What matters the outer world where the children of life play? For here in this amphitheater, there is infinite power and love, the center of Divine Will.

In this you can consciously live, and from this center you go forth to serve others and all life. He, the gentle Master, knows. He will give you the wisdom to act rightly.

Hold this vision quietly and steadily for one minute if you can and you will receive the blessing.....................

Cultivating Ch'i (vitality of mind, body, and spirit)

1.  Be cheerful.

2.  Breathe.

3.  Move your body.

4.  Rest your body.

5.  Master your emotions.

6.  Meditate.

7.  Simplify.

8.  Spend time in nature.

9.  Eat well.

10. Cultivate an awareness of your surroundings.

When a thought is planted in your mind, and if you think this thought long enough, it becomes a habit. If you habitually think this thought habitually enough, it becomes a belief. Something you believe to be true influences the way you see the world and act in it.

I am a good person.

I deserve happiness, joy, and prosperity, no matter what said.

I will be successful.

I am loyal, hard-working, and creative.

I am sensitive.

I have the power and strength to handle my problems in a loving way.

My worth is established by God.

I am special and unique.

I will follow my bliss.

I will not let people upset me. I am hurt by nothing but my thoughts.

God is guiding me to the most creative life for me.

I let go of anger, fear, doubt, and shame, and choose peace of mind.

I enjoy my work.

My thoughts are O.K.

My feelings are O.K.

My body is strong.

I have a right to enjoy my sexuality.

I have choices.

I like noticing the little things around me.

Creation is a wonder

I can say, "No".

People like me.

I am an important person and I will take care of me.

I am a child of God, and therefore good.

I love me.

You Were Born A Champion

Have you ever thought about the battles you won before you were born? Stop and think about yourself. In all the history of the world there was never anyone else exactly like you, and in all the infinity of time to come, there will never be another.

You are a very special person. And many struggles took place that had to be successfully concluded in order to produce you. Just think: tens of millions of sperm cells participated in a great battle, yet only one of them won; the one that made you! It was a great race to reach a single object: a precious egg containing a tiny nucleus. This goal for which the sperm cells were competing was smaller in size than the point of a needle. And each sperm was so small that it would have to be magnified thousands of times before it could be seen by the human eye. Yet it is on this microscopic level that your life's most decisive battle was fought.

The head of each of the millions of sperm cells contained a precious cargo of 24 chromosomes, just as there were 24 in the tiny nucleus of the egg. Each chromosome was composed of jelly-like beads closely strung together. Each bead contained hundreds of genes to which scientists attribute all the factors of your heredity.

The chromosomes in the sperm contained all the genetic material contributed by your father and his ancestors: those in the egg-nucleus the inheritable traits of your mother and her ancestors. Your mother and father themselves represented the culmination of over two billion years of victory in the battle to survive. And then one particular sperm--the fastest, the healthiest, the winner--united with the waiting egg to form one tiny living cell. The life of the most important living person had begun. You had become a champion over the most staggering odds you will ever have to face. For all practical purposes you had inherited from the vast reservoir of the past all the potential abilities and powers you need to achieve your destiny.

You were born to be a champion, and no matter what obstacles and difficulties lie in your way, they are not nearly so great as the ones that have already been overcome at the moment of your conception. Victory is built in to every living person.

Buddha on Handling Criticism

A man met him on the street one day and began to call him mean and ugly names. Buddha listened quietly and thoughtfully until the man ran out of epithets, and had to pause for breath.

"If you offer something to a man and he refuses it, to whom does it belong?" asked Buddha.

The spiteful man replied, "It belongs, I suppose, to the one who offered it."

Then Buddha said, "The abuse and vile names you offer me, I refuse to accept."

The detractor turned and walked away.

Joy in Spiritual Living

There should be joy in living the spiritual life. A faith without joy is not entirely genuine. If you are not happier as a result of your faith, there is probably something wrong with it. Faith in God should bring you a deep feeling of happiness and security, no matter what happens on the surface of your life. Each new day is another opportunity to serve God and improve your relationships with other people. This should bring joy. Life should be abundant and outreaching. It should be glowing and outgoing, in ever widening circles.

The A.A. Promises

If we are painstaking about this phase of our development, we will be amazed before we are half way through.

We are going to know a new freedom and a new happiness.

We will not regret the past nor wish to shut the door on it.

We will comprehend the work serenity and we will know peace.

No matter how far down the scale we have gone, we will see how our experience can benefit others.

That feeling of uselessness and self-pity will disappear.

We will lose interest in selfish things and gain interest in our fellows.

Self-seeking will slip away.

Our whole attitude and outlook upon life will change.

Fear of people and of economic insecurity will leave us.

We will intuitively know how to handle situations which used to baffle us.

We will suddenly realize that God is doing for us what we could not do for ourselves. -

Are these extravagant promises?  We think not.  They are being fulfilled among us--sometimes quickly, sometimes slowly. They will always materialize if we work for them.

Just For Today

Just for today I will try to live through this day only, and not tackle my whole life problem at once. I can do something for twelve hours that would appall me if I felt that I had to keep it up for a lifetime.

Just for today I will be happy. It assumes to be true what Abraham Lincoln said, that A Most folks are as happy as they make up their minds to be.

Just for today I will adjust myself to what is and not try to adjust everything to my own desires.

I will take my luck as it comes and fit myself to it.

Just for today I will strengthen my mind. I will study. I will learn something useful. I will not be a mental loafer. I will read something that requires effort, thought and concentration.

Just for today I will exercise my soul in three ways: I will do somebody a good turn and not get found out; I will do at least two things I do not want to do. Just for exercise; I will not show anyone that my feelings are hurt, they may be hurt, but today I will not show it.

Just for today I will be agreeable. I will look as well as I can, dress becomingly, talk low, act courteously, criticize not one bit, not find fault with anything and not try to improve or regulate anybody but myself.

Just for today I will have a program. I may not follow it exactly, but I will have it. I will save myself from three pests: Irritability, intolerance, inferiority.

Just for today I will have a quiet half hour all by myself and relax. During this half hour sometime I will try and get a better perspective of my life.

Just for today I will be unafraid, especially I will not be afraid to enjoy what is beautiful and to believe that as I give to the world so the world will give to me.
